Green Strategy for Shippers: Your Role in CO2 Reduction
Climate change is not a new phenomenon, however, with each year that goes by its impact and the consequences of inaction grow exponentially. In 2024, it’s no longer a consideration of whether to mitigate your impact on the world, it is an absolute necessity. This then leaves shippers and BCOs asking “How can I do my part?”.
Moving freight (all modes) contributes to approximately 8% of the world’s CO2 emissions, with shipping itself being around 2-3% of this. International bodies and regulators are mobilizing to do their part alongside governments. At the start of this year, the EU launched its Emissions Trading System (ETS) and in July 2023 the International Maritime Organization revised its 2018 greenhouse gas emissions strategy. What was initially a goal of 50% reduction is now a net-zero goal by or around 2050.

Maximize load efficiency
Ensuring you maximize your load capacity by filling containers and minimizing empty space. Vessels should only use fuel for what they were built for: carrying goods.
Choose the right routes
Routes or multi-modal options that minimize carbon emissions can help shippers optimize for the most eco-friendly way to move cargo.

Opt for green packaging
Choose packaging that is recyclable/reusable and minimize the amount of wastage. This goes a long way in doing your part to reduce emissions spent producing that packaging.
Support green ports
Ship from ports that are committed to reducing their carbon footprint. Thus, you will indirectly support these initiatives.
Purchase carbon offsets
Carbon offsetting will allow your business to mitigate the emissions you produce.
